Dear Rotofugi,
I have a question to ask! It's not about an upcoming toy release, but it is about a toy. I've posted pictures of my little plush bunnies in the customs section of the forum.... viewtopic.php?f=17&t=5530

Most of the toys I come up with are one of a kinds, with a few exceptions. But I've realized I just keep making these bunnies and will probably keep making them forever. So how do I copyright them? Though they're simple, I think their three-section design is unique... I haven't seen anything like them yet.

I'm sorry if this is in the wrong place rotofugi! I did consider posting this in Everything Else... But I had a question! I hope you have an answer...

The basic answer is that "creation IS copyright."

You can claim legal copyright without filing anything.

http://www.copyright.gov/circs/circ1.html

There are some advantages to claiming a registered copyright, namely the right to sue and receive statutory damages for infringement, but it is not necessary per se.

You can register online for $35 per copyright:

i have copywritten many a plush toy in my day. here is a link to the visual arts copyright fact sheet:
http://www.copyright.gov/circs/circ40.pdf
here is a link to the form with instrustions:
http://www.copyright.gov/forms/formgr_va.pdf
there are two forms on that document. page 6 is the Visual Arts Form. i would call them to make sure you dont have to fill out both, but i am pretty sure you don't. i am the worst at forms, and their hotline is super helpful.

i know that when you send it in, you also have to send in whatever the fee is, photos of your work (front, back, sides), and measurements. i usually paper clip the photos together to keep it in order & write the measurements on the back of the photos. re-read the instructions to make sure that is all you need. i could be forgetting something.

make sure you read the part titled "Registration for Two or More Works with One Application and Fee" on the fact sheet. that will allow you to copyright everything as a collective, so you can get it all done at once & save money. my collective is called "I Make Monsters", and i fit everything i can on that form. ;)

thats the general idea if it. i hope this pointed you in the right direction.

xo.

Nice info Steff!

So it looks like registering following the instructions for "Registration for Two or More Works with One Application and Fee" would be the way to go!
